De-Escalation Techniques: Limiting the Use of Force in Public Interaction. This course explores evidence‑based approaches to recognizing escalating behavior, managing high‑stress encounters, and applying verbal and non‑verbal techniques that defuse tension before it becomes a crisis. Participants will learn how to assess risk, maintain situational awareness, and make informed decisions that prioritize safety, dignity, and proportionality. This course is a required course to be completed by an officer holding only a basic proficiency certificate, at least once every 48 months, as a requirement for an intermediate proficiency certificate, and as a requirement for an advanced certificate.
